never worked on marine engines before , but many others Harleys , Fords , Chevys etc etc ,I was wondering if there is a way to swap out the Cd/points set up with a modern cdi ignition set up ?? cheapest i could find a replacement part was $279.00 bucks , if im spending that much id like to go modern ! any info would be greatly appreciated ! thanks , Red

My quick response is No. That said without even bothering to look at the parts books. First worry would be possibly the crankshaft. Then the flywheel, stator, timer base and mounting, coils, power pack, and all the respective mounts and wiring. Like I said, I didn't bother looking.

BTW.... The term "Selectric" pertains to the shift setup. The 1968 55hp is not a Selectric model, it' is a "Hydro Electric Shift" setup.

Also, in agreement with FDGator.

Forgive us all as we attempt to clarify the issue. "Selectric" was Evinrude's name for their push button control. It was used on their electric shift models AND their hydro-electric shift models, but with different push button switches inside. Johnson made it more (or less) confusing by calling their controls "Electra-Matic" and "Hydro-Electric" with their version of different switches.

Clear as mud yet?
