1964 mercury 100

Bumped starter it moves flywheel only 1/4 turn, i just touched positive from battery, lotsa sparts little turn
wondering if i should connect pos to starter?

Is it hard to get gaskets seals orings for this motor? Do u know how to check cyl compression manually, starter only turns flywheel like 1/4 turn

IF the starter won't spin it good--so you can compression test it--I wouldn't go any further. You need to see what you have.

Jeff

PS: Does the prop spin freely in neutral? If not, the lower unit could be a mass of rust.

The water pump impeller is fairly standard for this motor.---Most good marine shops should have 6 of them in stock !!!!----Pull it over with a rope to do the compression test.------Evaluate this motor before you spend a penny on parts.

Re: 1964 mercury 100 hp flywheel

I rebumped starter it turned flywheel sluggishly tookout plugs sprayed some lub in cyls tried again flywheel turns all cylinders go up and down, but still sluggish mabey ineed to clean or flush out old oil residue do motor flush???

Re: 1964 mercury 100 hp flywheel

Hey, thanx, its not running tring to start to check compression want to clean inside from old residue before, is that possible?

Awesome thanx, rope is just hanging does flywheel pull rope back in? Still checking starter not sure if my jumper cablez and truck battery good

I think you need to resign to the fact that this motor is 50 years old.---It should be taken apart for a complete inspection.---Replace piston rings / seals / gaskets.------You could start by removing the wee covers on the side of the motor to inspect the pistons and rings.------If not I believe this motor will leave you stranded soon after you get it running.

There are covers ( 3 if I recall correctly ) on the starboard side of the motor that allow you to look at the intake side of the pistons.----Just a few screws to take out and some simple gaskets that you might make yourself if they are damaged.
