lol their help I just bought a boat and its got on mercury 1964 100 horsepower motor the owner said hneeds to be rewired and I don't know this thing looks pretty nice but. Dont know if it works any suggestions?
Thanx youall

Merc had some horrible wiring problems back then that continued til the mid to late 70,s...pull the cowl and look for insulation cracked or gone on the smaller wires...also look for green corrosion in the wires....thats a 50 year old motor..before i spent time and money on wiring i would check compression and the lower unit etc....if you are a newbie to outboards take it to a good shop and pay for an hours time to check basics before spending any money on wiring and parts etc...if the basic look ok then you may get lucky and find a wiring harness but it wont be cheap..if you are handy with a soldering iron and understand basic electricity you can rewire the smaller wires yourself...its very time consuming and will be too expensive to have a shop do it..a lot of us have been there and done that on our personal motors back then...

You will be proud to own / run / maintain this motor.----You must learn the basics as shop labour costs will be astronomical on this motor.----Perhaps a manual and do a very thorough inspection before spending a $ for parts.

I agree with racerone ,a powerful outboard.Old Mercs are a disease,an addiction, with no known cure,I can speak from experience here. But the first thing you need is a manual and be prepared to work on it yourself.
There are a few videos of people repairing old wiring looms, one where the old plug is split and the wires replaced, which, when I want it, I can't find it.It took me almost a year to rebuild my beautiful '69 Merc800 and a few stupid and expensive mistakes before I found this site.Lots of help available here if you want to go with it.
One suggestion, drop the lower unit, pull the plugs and turn the flywheel, clockwise,if it moves see if you can hook up a battery and do a compression check. If you have good compression, give it a go.But then I suffer from Mercaholism :D

Really? Sounds like i can do mabey, im pretty mechanical, beats buying good used motor for 3 to 8 thousand, could i email u some pictures of inside motor?

Yea that can pose a problem seeing yours falls in the below 1965 range it is hard to say if it will cover your ignition in detail.
The merc book in this lot of manuals may cover your engine a little more complete good luck on finding one specific for your year. There are some differences in the lower unit also depending on your model number. I had a 1964 50hp and had to do alot of research in order to get the sync and link correct. If you need the flywheel puller PM me I can get it to you for cheap. Do not attempt to pull it without the proper tool.
Yes, i guess i would need it

Trying to get starter to work think its not working will remove and bench test sure solenoid is fried, have to compression test to see if core is good,
i can buy a used yamaha 125 for 3000 im thinking take out a loan or keep working on my 64 mercury 100 hp,?

I "rebuild" Merc starters regularly by simply cleaning the armature with fine sandpaper and lubing the bearings.

That's a great motor and worth the effort to get her going.

Jump it directly, without the solenoid in the circuit. If it spins the motor nice and fast, it's okay. It not, do the fix I mentioned.
