1957 Evinrude 5.5 Water Pump Problems

Chuck the driveshaft in your drill and see how well the pump is pumping are you turning the driveshaft clockwise as your pushing down on the impeller housing?

I did that already. Took the powerhead off, left the lower unit in the water and turned it clockwise with a drill and it pumps water all the way up to the top with ease and good pressure and volume.

Its to look and see if there is crap in the water jacket. It never hurts to replace the head gasket especially if you do not know how old it is. Always install a new gasket when you pull the head. You can even chuck a socket extension andcrank the engine with a drill to see if water gushes out the water jacket with the head off. A small leak on the head gasket can create pressure in the water jacket above water pressure and not effect compression much. Keep at it you will get the bugs ironed out

UPDATE: Pulled the head, sanded it down and cleaned the water channels in it. Also cleaned out the water channels and passages in the power-head as well. Replaced the head gasket and the core plug in the top of the head and the motor will still quit pumping water after about 30 seconds.

Looking at buying a new pump kit, but am not sure if I should or not. Any advice?
