Hello everyone! Just joined your forum and I'll probably have a lot of questions in the future, but right now I need to find out how much a 1957 Evinrude, model 25931, 35hp engine weighs. Just got it and a Alumacraft FD 14 foot at an estate sale and I'm going to be restoring both to as close to original as possible. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

It would likely come in at about 130/135 lbs.---------Yes some older motors are lighter than motors made today.---------The 57 model is well built and it is easy to learn how to repair / maintain them.-----Parts are easy to get too.

Anyone owning or restoring these old Johnson/Evinrudes should invest 18 bucks in this incredible book;

Thanks for the information on the book and website. Been looking at books but hadn't a clue which would be a good choice. I'll check the website after dinner in a few minutes. I'm really looking forward to working on the motor and boat. I love old stuff. Figures since I'm getting a little long in the tooth myself.

Yes, I learned several years back while running a maintenance crew the value of a good digital camera. And now with the new cell phones and Wi-Fi printing I feel like I'm in heaven.

Does it have a ignition switch or a push button start? You have alot to go through but if it does not have a kill switch now is the time to add one that way you dont need to choke it to stop it makes restarts alot better.

Yes, it's a push button start. I noticed the label "choke / stop engine" and knew right away I was going to change that. Right now the electric start is disconnected so I know there is a problem with it. Shouldn't be a problem to repair it though.

It should have the safety switch (mercury switch) on the pinion gear for the throttle lever that keeps it from starting at high rpms. You can add two wires from the armature plate under the flywheel to the two black wires in the harness and just wire the ignition switch according to the diagram. If you get the push to choke switch use the choke button for a horn. Your gonna want to pull the flywheel anyways and upgade the points, condensers and possibly coils it would be the ideal time to add the kill wires.

Not real easy to see you just situate the kill wires from each set of points through the plate so they dont restrict the motion of the points plate. If there is any up and down wiggle of the plate you want to replace the ring and mounting plate new to tighten it up. If the coils are dark colored just get the new sierra aftermarket coils CDI quality has been compromised for those coils.
