I have a 1955 Evinrude 15/18 hp. I just cleaned the carb and it appears the motor is not getting proper fuel. I am replacing the fuel lines but could this be anything else? Also, the fuel connector on mine has a single male part whereas I have seen some pictures of them with 2. I also have what appears to be an air or fuel line in the motor that is capped with a screw and just hanging. Any ideas?

Secondly, it’s compression is 60 for both cylinders hand pulled on a gauge. Is this ok?

First things first. Check the coils. Guaranteed the are shot unless they have already been replaced. Somebody has converted the pressure tank to a fuel pump, so maybe they did the coils too. 60psi is about minimum but might be ok once you get it running.

Ok, it started right up the first time we tried and ran for 5 seconds. Now it won’t start without heavy heavy choke or starting fluid.

Do you know how to post a few pictures of that "clobbered" up fuel pump set up? My imagination can't quite get you a solid diagnosis.

You have no idea how many times I've heard a similar story. Check those coils. They may actually be new, but how do you know without at least looking? I think on a '55 you can see them through a hole in the flywheel.

Looks like a hack job to me.....not gonna work. Needs to be done correctly. Didn't see a video with fuel pump shown..Coils sound okay.....see some of the YouTube pump conversions.....or check with Rook here. He has done some nice documentation of his work on a recent post.

What the heck, where's the fuel pump? Or the gas tank for that matter. All I see is a hose directly to the carburetor, coming from somewhere

Pics of the fitting and the dangling air pressure line would be very helpful. I think what you have there is the regular old pressurized fuel tank fittings but no pressure tank. You're squeezing the bulb on the non pressure tank which fills the carb but when you get it going it runs out of gas immediately as there's no flow.
Either get a proper pressure tank or convert to later model fuel pump so you can run it with that plastic tank.
Sounds good and healthy when you start it.

Good to hear from you, O2. Yes I agree, sounds pretty strong....gotta get fuel supply properly set up.
