Hey guys I've got a 1989 Mariner 15 MH, SN# 0B389700.

This motor doesn't appear to have an air filter on it, nor can I locate a location to install one.

Should this motor have an air filter and/or how is the air filtered? Air appears to be able to pass in through the lower cowl area into the motor right now.

Thanks!

Never seen one yet on any outboard, but...

it doesn't have one. Not too much dirt flying around out there.

JR, don't feel bad, I have cleaned mouse nests/poop, hair, cowling insulation, road dust from towing, bugs, sand....all out of air "silencer" chambers. Outboards "should" have intake filters, or at the very least an easy to remove and clean, fine screen like a 50 or even 60 mesh. Your "Mercury" has virtually nothing.....kinda stupid. Beauty motor, by the way. Make sure the cowling insulation is mint.....otherwise completely remove it. Constant fuel vapors and sometimes an occasional mouse visit, will eventually break down the foam. Get rid of it completely..... doesn't help that much with noise unless your sitting close to the motor as with a tiller. I usually wear ear plugs anyway. I LIKE tiller motors.

I can't use a tiller 'cause it hurts my back, being crosswise like that over the waves.

Didn't know the later Mercs use an air filter. Sure is a good idea.

Dad told me he wants tillers because the BEST ride is always astern. Secondly when trolling, it's easier for the guide to observe line positions and direct your guests. Thirdly when guiding through unfamiliar territory, it's easier to keep looking back, your then gonna remember the path back out. He always say crosswise on the seat, regular boat, never a swivel chair. He did end up with a bad back, however.
