15hp evinrude driveshaft

will a 15hp 1976 driveshaft fit a 1984 model?
i was reading on "this old outboard" that later shafts (post 1977?) had hardened sections for needle bearings but looking at the schematic the parts look pretty much the same. what am i missing or misinterpreting? thanks

Driveshaft and gear pinion are different part numbers so suspect splines are different...

Right here on this site it says ----SAME PINION GEAR ----1974 to 1992 models !

hmmm, the 75 and 84 have totally different part numbers? thanks

??----Does not matter.------It clearly shows a same part # used in 1974 and 1992.----In 1993 the gear was changed and longer stub for the 2 pinion bearings.----The 93 and later bigger displacement models used them.----And a 1974 model gear case would fit on a 2007 model too.------Not the same internally but it would fit !!
