02 Honda 130 Not Shift After Changing Seals.

So I decided to change the seals on my lower unit myself. Once the new seals were installed and the lower unit was reinstalled back on the motor, the lower unit wouldn't shift. The shift linkage appears to be operating correctly. It appears the 2 shift robs are not not seating properly. I wrapped some Teflon tape around the teeth of the shift rod on the lower unit and reinstalled back on the motor. Still didn't shift. When I removed the lower unit again, I noticed that only able ¹/⁴ of the Teflon on the teeth of the shift rod was disturbed, suggesting that it isn't seating all the way in it's home in the shift rod in the swivel tube (motor). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you remove lower unit with control in neutral?----If yes then remove lower unit again.----Put lower unit in neutral and assemble.

Yes I removed it in neutral. I removed the shift shaft rod from the lower unit while changing the seals. Reinstalled it in the same way it came out. When I reinstalled in back on the motor, it doesn't seat in the shift rod coming out of the motor.

Hi,
I might be all wet here and completely off base since I have never worked on one of these or read the manual.

It's just that my feeble old memory has me thinking that I have seen, somewhere, that it's possible......even easy I think.....to accidentally get the shift shaft pin on the wrong side of the shifting slider. Item 4 in the link below.

If so, that might cause something like you're experiencing.

If I'm totally wrong and this is just a red herring I do apologize.

But I had to speak up in case it might be true. I don't know.

Good luck.

Another possibility is that while refitting the lower unit & if the shift shaft splines aren't lined up, the circlip # 32 can become dislodged.
Then #5 moves upward & out of mesh with #9.
When in place, the circlip can be viewed from the side without any dismantling. It is located just above #5 at the top of the swivel case, so is easy to check.

I believe this is what's going on in my case. However, I attempted to turn the shift shaft to get it into alignment. This, I believe has done more harm than good. Now when I reinstall the lower unit, it'll immediately go into gear. But now FWD NEU and REV are all in gear. And I can physically put the console throttle shifter into FWD. Other than what I'm assuming would require the power head to be removed to realign #5 and #9, is there any other way to do this? I'm about to say screw it and bite the bullet with a shop. Let them fix it and be done with it.

Alright. Figured it out. The circlip is missing. I was able to adjust the shift shaft into the proper placement and slide it into its correct place. However, this brings a new issue.

1- I've discovered that the oil seals at the top of the shift shaft seals are bad. These are the seals that prevents engine oil from the oil pan from leaking. Now oil is slowly leaking out of the engine. How do I replace these seals. It appears that the only solution is to remove the entire engine block to get to these seals. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). See diagram below. These oil seals attached to #5.

2- How do I replace the circlip with such little room to work with? There doesn't appear to be any room to get enough leverage to snap the circlip into place.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help so far.

I could be wrong, but from memory any oil that leaks past those seals is oil coming from the flywheel cavity, which should be dry. If there is oil in that cavity it is likely the lower engine crankshaft seal is leaking. You can confirm that by removing the starter motor & look into the flywheel cavity for any oil. It may be that the crankshaft seal has been seeping slightly for a long time & oil has accumulated in the cavity until you disturbed the shift shaft seals, allowing the oil to leak out.
The easy solution, although fiddly, is to just refit the circlip using a narrow nose pair of pliers, etc It is a an "E" clip, so slides on from the side. Then monitor any ongoing oil leak whether to determine if it is minor or not.
The other solution is to remove the power head from the swivel bracket(which is necessary) & renew the shift shaft seals, & possibly the lower crankshaft seal & oil pump seals.
