I definitely will soon, which is the next trip to town. Meanwhile, I think my hand tightening the head bolts today which brought the pressure in both cylinders up to 50 PSI will suffice for a test run tmorrow.
Got sidetracked today but am now at the point of trying to fire her up tomorrow afternoon. Filled the lower end with gear oil. Timing looks good, and jbelieve I've got the ignition/carburater linkage dialed in. Also bought new gas today. Will post tomorrow with the results.
I just now torqued down the head bolts. I don't have an "inch pound" torque wrench (mine measures in foot lbs), but did notice that I failed to tighten the bolts at all after replacing the gasket. So, re-torquing now (w/o inch torque wrench & guessing for now) I brought both cylinders up to 50...
That's not it, unfprtunately as I just replaced the head gasket. However, could it be that I didn't use an actual torque wrench when cinching down the bolts? I don't have one and "assumed" that I could get by w/o one. Probably bad idea now that I think about it. Tell me I need to go buy one and...
Oh, wait! Wait! Flat side up, you said. I'm trying that now because I had it flipped. Hold on. Yep. I had it all bass ackwards. Also had the short and long screws in the wrong slots. Makes a difference, for sure. Thank you. I try not to be stupid but sometimes reality prevails. On to the next...
Racerone, my apologies for not responding sooner. Yes, I did mean coils, not condensors. I guess my real question is concerning what stops the retainer ring from moving? Once I align and screw in the one long coil screw along with the shorter one (×2) the entire retainer and armature still...
Putting her back together after a complete teardown and rebuild. 1959 Johnson 3 hp JW-15 classic. Paid $35.00 for the old dusty girl. I'm not 100% sure after replacing coils, points and condensers, along with new sparkplug wires, if, and/or how I need to align the Armeture plate before screwing...
A Classic song for sure. I remember it well. Those days when we were young, a bit dumb and bullet proof. Today? Old, but now gold and just a bit more frail. Got some paint on a few parts today. They're hanging and drying now.
Too hot outside here in Southern Oregon today so I worked on the...
Fitz, you sound like a great guy and your last response gave me goosebumps, with a sly smile alongside. Why? Because I can relate so well to what you said. Celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary last July and #31 will be here on the 30th of this month, this year. Meanwhile, the "boss" has...
Thankyou, fitz. At this time, and point in the rebuild, I've decided to move on because the drained oil was clean AND I can always come back to this "issue" w/o too much problem in the future. Plus, after putting the lower end back together I will/can run a pressure test in order to determine...
