I hope someone can help me. I picked up a 1960 Lark 40HP and it came with a wiring harness and what used to be a switch. I purchased a new switch (the old was destroyed) and started to wire it. At first when I turned the key to the right it immediately tried to start so I moved one of the cables...
Everyone,
I purchased this old 40HP outboard for no real reason except it was there and I thought it might be fun to get running and possibly use on my 1958 boat. I actually purchased a 1956 30HP Johnson that I like much more. My question is if this engine is worth working on or should I hand...
I purchased a Johnson RDE-18 30HP outboard that was sitting in a barn. After cleaning out most of the mouse droppings in the carburetor I disassembled and found that there is not spring attached to the needle and no place to attach one if I wanted to. Was that the norm back in '56? Is this a...
I finally got back on my 30 HP Lark and have a question on the high speed nozzle. I tore down my two carburetors and found the high speed nozzles appear to be slightly different. I'm wondering if this is what causes my fuel leaking out of the carburetor. 1 has a single hole (it was stuck and...
So something just dawned on me. I don't think either of my coils had the boots on them. Are the rubber boots important? If so that could be the problem.
Pictures attached. One is how I found it in the boathouse and the other is after I started cleaning it up.
So I tested the spark using a gauge. The top cylinder consistently had a good blue spark across about 3/8 of an inch. The bottom cylinder would shoot across but not consistently. I would notice no spark every now and then. I am attaching a picture of my tester gap and the compression gauge. I...
I need some help. I have a 56 Evinrude outboard that just won't idle and run. I have good spark, have cleaned the carburator, set the timing using a timing tool, rebuilt the tank, and have new non-ethanol gas at 24 to 1 ratio. I know the tank & gas is good because I tested it on another motor...
After taking it apart and doing a few minutes of testing my best guess is that the problem is the spark plug cables. I pulled both of the coils and if the folks on youtube are correct, they tested good. I did find a little resistance on the spark plug cables.
Pictures attached.
Thanks for all...
I need some help. I have a 30HP Evinrude with no spark. I actually have 2 of these motors one doesn't have a mercury switch and it seems to work. The other doesn't have any spark. I assume it is probably just my wiring. These motors are not on a boat and I'm using a remote trigger starter on the...
I purchased this motor recently to use on my 58 Rich Line Boat. I have 2 wires coming out of the magneto / points that are not attached to anything. I did some quick research and it looks like maybe these went to a kill switch. Question is do I need them connected to start the engine. I want to...
