1956 Evinrude 30HP Wiring

I need some help. I have a 30HP Evinrude with no spark. I actually have 2 of these motors one doesn't have a mercury switch and it seems to work. The other doesn't have any spark. I assume it is probably just my wiring. These motors are not on a boat and I'm using a remote trigger starter on the solenoid. The question does the Mercury switch need to be connected to ground or something? Right now I don't have it connected to anything. Once I know that answer I can start to dig deeper. Thanks, Glen

I guess if your hot wiring for cranking, you don't have to worry about the mercury switch. I think they used it for elec start so you have to put in neutral in order to spin the motor with the starter. It has no control on your spark. If no spark you should check the grounding wires that come from the points.....make sure they are not grounded. Next: points, coils, condensers. Coils have likely already been replaced.

A 1956 has no ignition switch, so there is no ignition wiring, except for one wire going to the vacuum cut-out switch, which has nothing to do with spark on a non-running motor with no vacuum present. Tim suggests the coils may have been replaced. If they haven't been, they certainly need to be. None of them have survived 60+ years.

Thanks. I just wanted to confirm that before starting to replace parts. The points look good so my next step is the replace the coils. Really appreciate the help.

Most of these vintage motors have had coils replaced already.----No need to throw out coils that were replaced 5 years ago.-----Posting pictures of the coils in there will help you.----Perhaps save you some beer tokens !

I like beer tokens! I'll post some pictures tonight. I did order new coils and points. I have some extra spark plug wires. Thanks,Glen

Glen, if you want to post a picture you must size it below 1000k and then go to "go advanced" on bottom of the message you are about to send.....hit the paperclip up on user interface area and follow prompts to get picture into your post.....then hit "done". And then send your reply.

After taking it apart and doing a few minutes of testing my best guess is that the problem is the spark plug cables. I pulled both of the coils and if the folks on youtube are correct, they tested good. I did find a little resistance on the spark plug cables.

Thanks for all the help.

The condensers have also been replaced, so we can assume the points have too. See one coil wire very close to points cam on the crankshaft. I often find this wire rubbed right to the conductor and grounding out. Make certain you also get copper core spark plug wires. Probably already know that from YouTube, eh?

If you haven't already, CLEAN the points' contacts. Especially if they are new. They often will have an invisible non-conducting film on them.

Looks like Glen gave up for now. His wife got a "honeydew" list for him......mine too......It's yes mam, no mam for me too.
