Sheared the prop drive pin on my Johnson 4r71d 4hp direct drive motor couple days ago. Ordered a new pin. While I'm waiting for it to get here, I noticed the slot the pin fits in behind the prop is a bit wedge shaped, and the piece of broken pin I took out of the driveshaft doesn't fit into...
Hello,
Ran my new used Evinrude on a lake yesterday to check it out and while it runs well at speed, it won't stay running on idle. Idling fast enough, it's just that it coughs frequently when idling, and sometimes when it does that it kills the engine. Running up the throttle a bit solves...
I have a duratank 6 gallon outboard gas tank for my Mercury 25hp 1998. The hose fitting for the tank end got ripped out of the tank and lost. I can't figure out what kind of fitting will work for it, or if maybe something broke off the tank fitting. If something broke off that would explain...
Well I realized today that the outboard I just bought has no pull starter on the flywheel, or apparently, anywhere. I've never even seen a small outboard like this without one and didn't think to check. My bad. Anyway, I'm wondering if one can be retrofitted to this outboard. I've run down...
Hi all,
Trying to figure out how to disconnect the shift rod where it is attached to the shift lever. Want to remove lower unit to figure out why I'm not getting telltale water.
Can't find anything at all that shows this particular connection, even in my Seloc manual.
See the photo: (note: I...
My tank got some water in it and when I started the 25hp outboard, the water got in the carburator etc. I've gotten the water out of the tank, but how to get it out of the engine? My Mercury had a water trap but this Johnson doesn't -- it's a 1981 25hp, the fuel runs into a filter setup, then...
Resealed the lower unit on my 25hp Johnson 1981, ran two kinds of oil in it for about 15 minutes each to see if water got in. The green/yellow oil has sat in the glass for two days and no water has separated out. The blue/green Mercury LU oil I ran last night and collected this morning...
Refilled lower unit with Mercury lower unit oil, ran for 15 minutes in a tank in forward and reverse, here's what came out (see photo with blue oil). I can't tell if this is watery oil or not. The previous gear oil I took out (green) hasn't separated into water and oil after two days. The...
Flyingscott, according to what you're saying, it appears this motor does not have a thermostat. Telltale comes right out of the cylinder head above the spark plug.
For future reference, what is this block style called, or is there a number designation for it?
Let the oil sit all night and this is what it looks like this morning -- not seeing any water separating out, but it sure looks weird. I used a gear oil of the right type for this application (not branded for marine, but it was the kind that isn't supposed to foam up if it gets water exposure)...
Just bought this 25hp Mariner, 1986 A174525, and I'm finding conflicting info about where the thermostat is, or if it even has one. Read all the posts I could find on this site about "thermostat" on my motor and some posters say that Mercury motors of this size and smaller don't have them.
My...
Just finished resealing the lower unit on my 1981 Johnson J25RCIM, and I was not successful. Ran in a tank for a while this afternoon and checked the fluid, came out looking like pea soup. Water is still getting in somewhere.
Two questions, here's the first: is there a good way to check where...
Thanks racerone -- regarding the driveshaft seals, when they go back into the driveshaft housing do they go in with the openings facing each other, as in this photo? Or open side into the housing for both? Got them out and then wasn't sure which way they were oriented to each other.
I also...
1981 Johnson 25hp model J25RCIM
This question is about the brass bushing I removed from the lower unit: its rubber O-ring is too small to cover the opening it came out of, so I'm thinking it fits inside the bushing instead of goes "under" the bushing as it appears to be in some other models...
First-timer removing a lower unit, on a 1981 Johnson 25hp two-stroke.
Model J25RCIM
Lower unit bolts are undone, lower unit drops about five inches, and I've loosened the shift rod connector screw (see photo). The LU still not coming off, and before I put any real force into it, want to make...
