    South Australia, so basically every cheap part I have replaced costs a whole bunch more. The cheapest thermostat I could find was $60. I ended up just buying the original part though.

    ahh perfect, thanks for all the help. my pair of needle nose pliers are just a bit too short which has made it quite tricky to grab at but I'm sure ill be able to work something out

    i think so, and the fact that plenty of water comes out the thermostat if the cover is open makes me think it is a problem with the top end
