Help replacing upper water tube grommet Johnson 6hp

Hey guys, i have a 1970 Johnson 6hp and have had quite a few troubles with the water flow being low. i have now found that the upper water tube grommet is basically melted and needs replacing.

i have taken the powerhead off but still cant see how the old grommet should come out.

any help would be much appreciated

It is half way up the exhaust housing.-----Push in on the rubber through the holes.-----Remove grommet.------Install the new one.-----Elegantly simple.-----No need to remove powerhead for this procedure.-----Factory had a special ( time saving ) tool.-----But you can do this without that !!

i see, do i need some kind of tool with a little hook or bend on the end? i have tried poking it with a screw driver but it didn't get me very far
 
A sharp pointy tool would help start removing this.-----Then pull it out with long needle nose??-----Simple job.-----Did that as a teenager at Johnson dealer !-----I have the special tool somewhere in my cluttered work area.

ahh perfect, thanks for all the help. my pair of needle nose pliers are just a bit too short which has made it quite tricky to grab at but I'm sure ill be able to work something out

ok i went out and bought a pair of longer needle nose pliers but i am still struggling a bit. i think the old grommet must be hard and brittle because i basically cant budge it. the copper pipe itself also feels really solid like there is something more than the rubber grommet holding it in. is that possible or is the rubber just a tight fit? also would pulling really hard on the copper pipe remove it or would that just damage the pipe? thanks again for the help

sorry i was busy for the last couple days and just had a look now, i can see the two holes now that keep the rubber grommet in place. i feel like i am still missing something though. from what i understand, the water tube should pull straight out an then the grommet should come out easy. is there a trick to removing the tube itself? i swear i have pulled about as hard as i can on that thing and it wont budge. could it be rusted in place maybe? thanks again for all the help btw
 
Why do you think the grommet is melted? If that thing is that tight around the tube, it probably isn't leaking and doesn't need replacing. If you must replace it, get bad and mean and do whatever it takes even if destroys the tube. Stuff happens after 50+ years.

ok it is finally out, the bad news is that the tube is in pieces. the grommet was actually melted and restricting water flow over the end of the tube like i thought. my last question is whether its worth buying a new tube or trying to make it myself? a new one is going to cost me around $60 aud so if at all possible i might do it myself.

South Australia. So that complicates it I suppose. That tube was used for many years and there must be hundreds of new and used ones laying around in goodie piles all over U.S. and available for a cheap price. Yeah, I know, shipping.

Have you looked into AOMCI, The Antique Outboard Club? www.aomci.org
 
yeah from what i have found ebay generally has the cheapest parts and even then they are all from the U.S.

in my last message i meant i have now ordered one of the pipes off eBay and figured it wasn't worth doing it myself. ill have a look at the AOMCI and maybe ask there if i run into anymore problems.

Thanks for all the help with this, somehow i struggled more with this pipe than i did resealing the gear box and replacing the powerhead gaskets😔.
