Is i usual for injectors to get bad?

Hello,

I got a Laser 220 Xri efi 1987. The engine is in really nice condition but doesen't run so good so I started troubleshooting.

There are spark from each coil and changed sparkplugs.

Now I pulled the injectors and hoping they are causing the rough running.

Is it usual that injectors go bad?

Go bad its not a frequent thing, clogged is a frequent thing. If you have a clogged or multiple clogged injectors you will have reduced performance, rough running and lower RPM and MPH.

You can clean them with seafoam or other solvents with low pressure and a battery to trigger it. Send them out to be cleaned professionally or buy new. (they are pricey new).

Seems like I'm on the right route then. As far as know the injectors never been out of the engine. Also, I got rough idle, the tachometer fluctate constantly. At low speed it is very obvious that the engine runs uneven. Sometimes when it is at its worst you can very well feel the vibrations in the boat.

Also, I got a drop in power, it reaches only 52 knots and that is a far cry from the 65 knots stated by the former owner. Also there is a drop in revs at WOT. I only get a out 4900-5000 rpm and as far as I know these engines should rev in the ballpark 5900-6200 rpms.

I ran a compression test and the cylinders were fairly even.

What kind of compression nu nere should I expect from a healty 2,4 litre V6? What is an acceptable differance between the cylinders?

150 psi. Usually want them within a few pounds of each other. You can ship them out to be professionally cleaned for I think $75. Well worth it if never had been done.

I'll do a second compression test to see what numbers I'll get.

I got a company nearby that are specialized in injection restoration, testning and cleaning injectors, diesel fuel pumps and so on. I will leave the injectors to them tomorrow. Hopefully there is issues with clogged injectors otherwise I do not know what would be the next step in this process.

The 220 Xri had problems from get go.....send the injectors and ECU to Brucato and have tested, cleaned ,and balanced. Fuel additives/cleaners wont clean them...about $150 total

I sent the injectors for service to a local injection workshop and now awaits the verdict.

Sending The ECU to Brucato is probably something like a last resort since the cost for shipping is really expensive.

What is generally failing in these ECU's?

Any other common issues with the Laser 220 XRi's?

Now I got the injectors back and five of them were perfect, the 6th had a little bit different spray pattern. They don't leak and spays the same amount of fuel. The service guy said that he didn't think my engine's problem was due to this 6th injectors different spray pattern.

What do you think?

Also I found these cheep injectors on Ebay, would it be worth replacing the 6th injector with one of these?
