9.8 wont pump water

Plastic washer at the top of the water tube melted ?----------Did motor suffer from severe overheat ?--------------What did the old impeller look like ?

That happened to me as well and it ended up being the melted plastic washer as racerone mentioned above. To verify, you could try shooting water from a hose up the copper water tube to see if it comes out the telltale. Blowing air through with a compressor would work too.

impeller was ok but starting to crack...i bought this motor at a garage sale. 25$ good deal so i thought.... what is a telltale mean???? i can,t shoot air tonight god damn air compressor died. when it rains it pours..but sh.t happens.. thanks all greg

need more info, prior overheating, why was impeller changed?still overheating?a telltale is the port on backside where water is discharged, the pisser!!is the housing that has cracked or the new impeller??check COMPRESSION FIRST,POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET FAILURE LEADING TO OVERHEATING.

What is the serial number? It may not have a telltale if it is a earlier 9.8 motor. Merc 9.8s do not have a head just a water jacket cover, there will be a 90 degree fitting on top of the powerhead with a rubber tube going down to the telltale fitting on the lower cowl if it has one. If it is a salt water motor yopur probably best served to pull the powerhead and clean the water circuits and replace both the grommet and nylon bearing they called it. It keeps the water tube from getting pushed up into the channel.

This powerhead has the plastic fitting on top for the telltale. It is a pain to pull the powerhead once you remove all six nuts use a 2X4 and a hammer and smack it side to side until it loosens up.

Not sure if these are the exact parts you need we need the serial number of the motor? You will need the gasket also.

There is no head gasket on this 9.8 Mercury !-------------Remove the back 4 nuts.------Then loosen the front 2 nuts and gently pry up on the studs to loosen the block.
