    Carb losing prime?

Had the fuel polished today. This is what the first 2 micron filter looked like after the first tank turn-over. They turned the contents of the tank over about 3 times and used up 3 filters before the fuel looked clean. I'm hoping this was the root cause of my issue. Thanks, JJ

    Carb losing prime?

A few weeks ago both motors quit while out for a cruise. First the starboard and then the port. In both cases I found that the carb bowls were dry, as there were no squirts from the accelerator pump when the throttle was pumped. I got the motors started by removing the spin-on filters/separators...

    Revisit Chrysler 318 timing suggestions

That's how I plotted my total advance curves. If I remember correctly the digital light was like $120 at Auto Zone. I don't think they had them available for loan. Thanks, JJ

    Circulating Pump Failure

After converting my starboard engine to FWC this weekend I was scratching my head trying to figure out why it was overheating. Then I pulled the circulating pump and found this. This is what happens when you use the fresh water model circulating pump in a raw water cooling setup. I believe the...

    FWC Conversion

Hello all, Is this the hose I need to go from the raw water pump to a FWC heat exchanger? Does anyone have any images of this hose on a motor? Thanks, JJ

    FWC Conversion

Anyone have experience converting from RWC to FWC? If so, was engine scale / rust an issue? How did you mitigate it? I'll be converting my RWC engine with barely 75 hours to FWC. Before winter lay-up I performed several rinses with fresh water and salt away. I'm wondering if it's worth using...

    Old-style Chokes

Hey everyone, Last summer I installed Edelbrock electric choke kits on my freshly rebuilt Carter AFBs. The choke linkages don't match up correctly so I've decided to go with a standard manifold-style choke assembly: the type with the coil that sits inside of the intake manifold. Does anyone...

1976 F-30 with single 440 water in oil

Water having a higher density than oil will settle to the bottom like in the picture. Gas having a lower density than oil will float on the top. -JJ

    Adjusting a Nylon Stuffing Box

Does anyone have any experience adjusting the nylon type stuffing boxes? Since the cotter pin holes only line up in one position, adjustments can only be made in full turn increments. Is a full turn too much for adjusting a stuffing box? -JJ

    Mounting Bracket or Dimensions wanted...

Hello all, I just purchased a Lenco heat exchanger for my 77 vintage stbd side 318. My port side motor already has FWC. The exchanger is the kind that mounts above the motor behind the electronic ignition bread box. The problem is, Lenco doesn't manufacture the bracket kit anymore so they...

    Improved Fuel Efficiency

I'd like people to weigh in with their opinions here... I bought the boat last summer: 31 foot Silverton Sedan with twin 318s. I ran it from the point of purchase, to my home port at 15 knots for about 4 hours. I consumed about 3/8 tank of fuel, which equals about 21 gallons per hour. This...

    Clicking Sound

Last weekend while installing a new distributor and setting timing, I used a socket wrench to manually rotate my engines in order to find the TDC mark on the flywheel. While manually rotating the engines I could hear a "clicking" sound as I rotated. Not the clicking sound that comes from the...

    Chrysler 318 Advance Curves (Mallory)

This weekend I installed a new Mallory YLM579AV distributor on my Port engine. My Stbd engine already had the same distributor installed about 2 years ago. I plotted the timing up to 3000 rpm. My Stbd distributor is giving me a few more degrees of advance, but considering that it's older and...

    318 cooling problems

It sounds like the impellers are placed into the pump with the wrong fin orientation. If the pump pulley turns CW, then the impellers also turn CW, but the impeller fins get dragged along the inner surface of the pump housing and therefore point in the CCW direction. If your turns CW, then...

    Timing a 318

Yesterday I checked my timing and plotted some curves. See below. My starboard motor, which I suspected the timing was off, was timed to a BASE value of 5* AFTER TDC. The monkey who rebuilt this motor used the wrong 5* mark on the flywheel. I set the correct BASE of 5* BTDC and plotted the rest...

    Motor Stuck

Hey guys, My buddy just bought an old junker. It's got an 80's vintage 115 hp outboard merc that hasn't been started in YEARS. Right now the motor is stuck in the upward tilt position and he can't figure out how to get it down. He said he removed some of the hydraulic lines to let the fluid...

Top speed twin 318bs 30 ft silverton

Is it just one motor giving you problems or both? An anti siphon valve is a one way check valve that stops fuel from siphoning out of the tank uncontrollably in the event that the fuel line is ruptured. They are usually located above the pickup tube at the fuel tank. See the circled valve in the...
