    is it a hino or?

Folks.....looking at a 1983 Bayliner with reported Hino engines, but when I check out the engines, I notice a big Hino stamp on top of engine, yet engine model tag is CM 655 NA, which I take to be Chrysler Mitsubishi naturally aspirated........so why is the word Hino on it? Im getting...

    8D life expectancy

Guys and gals......what would you deem to be the normal life expectancy of an 8D dual purpose deep cycle/starting battery? Mine are 3 years old, always on the charger on shore power when away from boat and one of them cranking slow now. Just wondering how long they should last.

help concerning pencil zincs/trans cooler....old school

Hi folks.....this might be an issue requiring some "experienced" members to help with. 1970's vintage Crusader Thermoelectron conversion.  454's, thermoelectron trans and v drives. I have the expected pencil zincs on the engine oil coolers and no issue there, but the boat also has the...

I have old (70's vintage) thermo electron (warner gear) v drives. the tag on them says APG 90 lubricant, which I am knda guessing means all purpose gear oil 90w......Is that stuff readily available today? What are options if no longer available? What do you use in yours?

    fuel tank life

dub question that probably nobody can definitively answer, but just for conversation.... What is the life expectancy of an aluminum fuel tank? I know of boats that are famous for tank failure due in part to installation design, i.e. starboard tanks on Bayliner 32's. I know of a couple boats...

    question on v drive fluid

I've got late 70's vintage crusaders with Thermo Electron transmissions and Thermo Electron v-drives. All the fluids look very clean but I want to add a tiny amount of fluid to my port side v drive. I will try to attach pics here of the tag and the v drive. There is a dipstick on forward end of...

    mysterious exhaust smoke

Folks, on my older raw water cooled 454's, they have been running great and still so but.......last weekend when putting around about 1500 rpms, I noticed a never before seen darkish brownish grayish smoke coming out of starboard exhaust pipe, with still good water flow and all gages normal...

    fuel consumption report

gang...just throwing this out there for fun really. I know that 454 fuel burn can be an issue of concern sometimes. I know for me it is. Past weekend I decided to run my 32' sportfisherman over to Catalina Island and back at a slow speed to see what my consumption would be and I was really...

    Fireboy M-2A fume detector

Hi, I almost hate to bring this topic up, but since we're all friends......Does anyone out there have personal experience with one of these Fireboy M-2A gas fume detectors? My boat has one installed with one sensor below located between the motors and above the twin 8D batteries (both in an...

    Bilge blower thoughts please

Hi gang. So this topic regards my 1976 Jeffries sportfisher with twin 454s. For those who may not know, Jeffries was a local legend builder in southern California in the 1960s thru early 80s. They built county lifeguard boats and harbor patrol boats as,well as pleasure craft. I mention this to...

    Fuel tank grounding

So as I'm doing a new blower install, I discover the fuel fill ground wire corroded off and hanging. So I start exploring the tank grounding itself and see grounding tab on top of tank (aluminum) with ground wires disappearing into the spaghetti of wires into a bulkhead and no evidence of where...

    454 fuel pump question

Guys, I have the older 454s with Holley 4160 750 c.f. marine carbs and mechanical fuel pumps. I'm contemplating replacing the pumps with electric pumps, thinking this would eliminate the diaphragm failure/leak possibility. Is conversion to electric a better/safer idea than simply replacing my...

    really dumb 454 question

I have thermo electron 454's in my old boat. I realize the 454's are gm motors. Recently I saw a boat that had 454's but with Chrysler stamped manifolds. So I'm assuming that it's just a different factory marinization of the same motor? Yes? And since I'm asking.....is there any...

no spark at all on one engine , related to timing shunt (454 crusader)

Friends, I have encountered a new problem with my recently installed delco est's. Last week, I was fine tuning the carb adjustments at idle and when done with that, I decided to check once more the base timing and total advance for the heck of it. I have timed these engines several times since...

what is this in the exhaust stream?

This is my starboard motor at start up. It clears completely after about 10 minutes warm. It smells gassy but does not leave a slick. Oil looks good on dipstick. My starboard carb needs attention. I notice that the secondary plates are dry at idle but when engine shuts down, fuel seeps onto the...

    3208 ta temp question

I am helping a friend who just bought a 44' Veneti with the twin 3208's. Hours on the motors say about 2000. We did oil sample which came back good on port side, but elevated aluminum on starboard which "could" indicate cylinder wear. He decided to proceed with purchase without retest. Both...

timing a new delco voyager est distributor question

I'm a dummy. Cant quite understand total timing but here is first question. The new delco distributors I just installed include a timing "shunt" to be plugged in to set base timing. I get that. But when I want to increase rpm to 3000 rpm to check total timing, do I remove the shunt or leave it...

454s with Holley carbs questions about carb operation

I'm trying to better understand the operation of and tuning of the carbs on my older 454s. The carbs are SAE J1223, model 9015-1. Research tells me they are marine carbs 750 cfm designed for electric choke and (vacuum secondaries?). Engines are running ok but starboard motor seems really rich...

help with identification and source for exhaust part 454

Guys, on my older (80's vintage) 454's, I have the pictured exhaust collector on each engine, going into muffler. They are looking suspect and I want to replace them. I looked at fiberglass elbows and various tees to fabricate something, but I was absolutely shocked at the expense of the...
