Do 350 454 CIDs have

Hello:

Do 350 454 CIDs have zincs? If so where are they located? I can't seem to find them on the heat exchanger.

Look on the top of the exchang

Look on the top of the exchanger near the end caps at about 2" below the dead center of the curved shape. You will see a 3/4 sized brass nut ...Possibly painted over? But that is it.

You will also see them on the u-cooler on the base. Those are 9/16" brass caps.

Looking for IR data from those who have temp. readings on oil filter and transmission case or does anyone have the spec. on temp.of oil what the min./max. should be from Crusader.
 
What's the trick to replac

What's the trick to replacing zincs in exchangers and U-coolers without getting coolant and/or oil all over the place - or would I?

"All the crusader zincs are exposed to raw water. No oil, coolant. Still, you don't want salt water dripping on the starter from the HE zinc."

"Most change the zincs every year. It depends on how much you put on (surface area) and how fast they are eaten (each boat has is own foot print).

You should be comfortable to check them as often it seems needed.

I get a last look under the boat in NY in the end of september or early october.

The ucoolers and HX can be done anytime... its just salt water, divert the runoff with a funnel.

I plan to check my ucoolers zincs this weekend at 16 degrees (now that I know boat has them). I'm full of pink so I'll be carefull to not spill that stuff either. Since i have neglected them for 3 years I most likely will not have even a trace of the pencils.

Dave is in fla so he probably just saw the shaft zincs a week or so ago and dove with a 3 mill wetsuit."

"Just for the different viewpoint. I now inspect and in some cases change the u-cooler and heat exchanger zinc every 5-6 weeks when the boat is in. As one discussion here described the particulate accumulations of the zinc clogging the core of the u-coolers, I made it a point after thorough cleaning to monitor this.

At the marina, we were good in our original location but the last year we were a bit farther in and noticed a bit more zinc usage. Last season at the house, we had very little usage and the same rudder, shaft and trim tab zincs might actually work for the upcoming season..I will change them regardless.

Anyone using more than 1 shaft zinc? I had two one year, one way up into the shaft recess actually out of the flow of water but in the water and the other closer to the struts. One person told me it is better to keep them away from the water current flow and mount them into that recess in the hull.... ??????"

"Can't help you with the location of the shaft zincs but I can tell you my mechanic used two. I recently moved from fresh water to salt water and had the bottom painted and zinc'd up - diver's dream, 4 shafts, 2 thrusters and added tab zincs before "going to the salt". But, I think it's been since spring of '09 for the internal zincs so I'm going to look at them.

BTW: the mechanic I was using told me not to use a diver - especially on shaft zincs because a diver uses an impact - he uses a BFH. Sure enough, one slid (into the other and not the bearing, fortunately)"

I hear you on the ucool and hx zincs at 5-6 weeks. I need to be more routine. I bet I have break offs in ucooler and so easy to replace. U can get a bunch of pencils without brass and keep swapping em out early to avoid the troubles. I was told as long as your at least one "hand" away from cutless bearing you will be okay acording to bernoulli...

I use a hammer when wet or dry. I change in water only if I have to. Other years I ate 1 zinc per shaft in 4 months but that was a problem at the dock.

Now that I have 2 heavy per shaft and at new dock I'm fine after 9 months. I guess I trust the diver when its me."

"It's good to put your zincs at either end of the shafts and not in the middle where they can cause vibration problems as the shaft flexes. I also have to change my U cooler and heat Xchanger pencils 2-3 times per season. You're right Al, much easier than dealing with a clogged cooler. Usually when I pull the pencils they look pretty good, but they're soft enough to crush with my fingers."

"Scott: better read that manual again....mine says to check every 30 days. Like Mike says, it they are soft, they are (or soon will) shedding and need to be swapped."
