"According to my owners manual (8.1 MPI/385hp) the fresh-water cooling system has a "SACRIFICIAL ZINC ANODE" in the heat exchanger. Why would the freshwater cooling system need a zinc anode, salt water yes but not fresh. Also when I remove this zinc anode will water come pouring out of the opening after I remove the anode ?

Because raw water cools the &#

Because raw water cools the "fresh water" in the heat exchanger the anode is in the raw water side. If you are operating in salt water the raw water side is salt and as long as the motor is not running it will not run out for long.

Should I have a bucket ready?

Is it necessary to close the sea cock when removing the anode ?

Thanks for the reply Steve.

"I guess I should have been more clear. The heat exchanger should be full of raw water, therefore when you remove the anode, the water will drain out. As long as the motor isn't running the raw water is not being pumped and will not continue to drain once the heat exchanger is empty. However both of your suggestions are not bad ideas and pretty good safeguards for both neatness and safety sake."

"Thanks Steve for the info. I have one more question. I called a local marine supplier and asked them if they carry pencil zincs, she said yes, what size do you need. I gave her the engine specs. but she said she needed the zinc size. I have no idea what size this engine uses. I e-mailed crusader a few days ago and asked them, they never answered me back. How can I find out what size it takes ?"

Take one out and take it to We

Take one out and take it to West Marine etc - they are in stock - actually there are possibly two different sizes in each heat exchanger. You can buy just the anode or the anode with the brass (which actually screws into the heat exchanger housing). If you have enough anode metal left it can be unscrewed from the brass cap (I think they recommend replacing if half the original length) - All of this will be very clear to you when you unscrew and remove one from the heat exchanger and look at it.
