YR- 88 88HP Kill Circuit issue?

First post so you will have to excuse me if I'm doing anything wrong. I have an 88 Johnson 88hp. That will only run if I disconnect the black and yellow wire directly from under the engine cover behind the starter . I have replaced the key switch. Emergency switch works as it should. Can someone for the love of god give me some guidance.

Is this engine new to you, OR have you owned and used it for some time?

Is there a Kill Switch on the dash/console/control box... and if so, is the lanyard attached?

It's obvious by your explanation that the kill circuit (black/yellow wire) is grounded out such as if the ignition key was turned to the OFF position.

Yes I have the lanyard attached. I have check the resistance of the lanyard switch as well it is working properly. I'm starting to think there is a pinched wire. I have had this engine for almost 1 and half years now and it runs well. Then this problem suddenly developed.

Disconnect the big red plug and see if it runs (jump start it). If it does, it is grounded out somewhere between there and the control/key switch (or the switches themselves). No run? Look for a short/grounded wire somewhere between red plug and power pack.

Great idea. This is the kind of guidance I have been need. I'm fairly mechanically inclined. But sometimes just get stumped. I will try tomorrow/post results.

To check the wire for being pinched.... simply disconnect it from the "M" terminal of the ignition switch.... if still no spark, it's a good chance the wire is shorted.

But... with that wire disconnected from the ignition switch, you suddenly have spark/ignition... replace the ignition switch as it has an internal short.

Will check that as well. Thanks.
