"Hello,
Please help me fix my newly purchased motor. The motor has been used in salt water. When I tried to start it, the rewind spring broke. I replaced it and now there's no sparks. There are lots of rust on the flywheel and the PP AY CD2 part. Should I sand them out or should it be the ignition coil to be blamed?

"Please give me an advice as why my urging for help was ignored. Was it too difficult to answer? Was it something I said that offended the users?
Any comment is much appreciated.

"Hi,friend,Tim here. Sometimes the questions people ask are hard to answer. I myself have problems getting my questions answered too. Its nothing personal. I ask more technical questions as I repair outboards for a living. Manuals need to be updated and old manuals are expensive. Expert help is always welcome. This is a great resource for help but sometimes the expert advice we seek just isn't on-line.
To try to answer your question we almost need to see the extent of the corrosion. I have repaired underwater recoveries and they are not near as bad as some of the "salties" I have seen. Can you send a picture or two to this site of the affected area? It may be that the damage to the water jacket and other internal parts is too severe to deal with. I will try to help you if other techs here are not interested. I wonder if one can post pictures on this site for aid of advisers? I haven't tried photos here as I am new to this site. Ok, will close for now, Tim"

"Dear Timothy Befera,
I appreciate the response. Any response is better than none and having been sitting waiting on a clue for 2 days. Good men like you are those who make this world a better place to live.
Anyways, I found out that the killswitch is missing after taken everything apart. Stupid me. Anyways, I sand out the flywheel magnets, the PP AY CD2 block and every piece of electrically metal contact, reinstall everything, pull the rope it fires right up. The problem is, the PP AY is now too tight on the flywheel and it smokes up per friction. I will have to adjust it tomorrow and replace the impeller the same time.
Take care, Sir. I deeply appreciate you! God bless!!

"Thanks Quan, you made my day.

"Thanks Quan, you made my day. In order to slow down any additional corrosion, when you open it up for the final adjusting be sure to get a good marine anti corrosion product to spray on the affected parts. I use a product from Amsoil made right here in Superior WI. It is called MP (for "metal protector"). However there are many products around in the marine supply industry. Take care and God bless you too

"You say that you replaced the starter spring.... and now there's no spark. Are you saying that it had spark before you replaced the spring?

Clean everything pertaining to the ignition system to make sure that all connections are perfect.

I retired before that engine came into existence and don't have the books on it so I do not know what the various reading should be. However, take the ohm readings of the stator under the flywheel and list them for others to see.

Hopefully all is well and it is only rust etc that is interfering with the ignition."
