Yamaha Trolling Motor Question

I currenlty have a T25X and my main motor is a 300 yamaha outboard. I few weeks ago I had an issue with the 25HP motor. Went on fishing trip in a remote area and the motor decided to not work for me. Had an electrical issue. Fixed that problem now but may have created an issue.

I was trolling with my big motor and I had the trolling motor down to use to slow me down. Left it in neutral and trolled for four days like that. Took off one time with the trolling motor still down. Noticed it quite quickly so stoppped and put the trolling motor up.

Now the boat will not go into forward gear. The prop shaft moves in and out of the housing 1/2" to 3/4". In forward gear the propeller shaft is all the way out and will not engage the forward gear. I have now taken it apart and the spline on the dog clutch is damaged. Almost like the shaft was trying to work itself out and the washer from the reverse gear to the spline is all worn and over the spline. The first 1/4" of the spline is wore down.

I am mostly curious if having it down while trolling or taking off that one time with it down could damage the prop shaft like that.

Also the dealer was telling me if I was am trolling with the big motor and the 25hp is down it has to be in reverse gear. But that really doesn't make sense to me. That would then rotate the motor would it not??
