"Hi all.Do you really need primer bulbs on remote oil tanks with built in eletric pumps or is this to manually pump to main tank in case of pump or power failure? Did`nt see the primer bulbs referred to in service manual, thought maybe someone added them.Any help would be appreciated Thanks"

"Thanks Zach,I`m replacing powerhead and trying to double check everything.I was going to replace filter/strainers in remote tanks when i got to thinking about this.Being you have lots of experience with yamaha motors do you have any suggestion on 1996 130`s?Were they good motors or not?Old powerhead rod bearing failed also loose piston bearing on another cylinder that would probebly would have failed shortly.Motors have 1200 hrs.New powerhead is a lot quieter than the old one beside it.Thanks for any imput"

"I owned a 1989 115hp. Same block. They are great engines but are suspect to piston drop if you lug the engine. (wrist pins will oval) Prop selection is important. Go for a prop that will reduce the strain on the rods. Less pitch is better...just don't take it up over the manufaturers red line, even if it will with the prop you choose."

"those motors area absoluetly bullet proof in my opinion, i have a pair of 98 200's ona 28 grady white and they have over 4000 hrs on them keep the carbs clean and clean filters they will run for ever. im sure the new one is quiter and will be for some time, probably makes more power too but like rollie said try to stay away from the red line, i have my 200's proped at 5100 rpms tops."

"My 115 topped out right at the Yamaha's reccommended rpm's with a 17 pitch on a 17 ft Double Eagle. After 3 years use it began to show signs of piston drop on one hole. I sold that unit and upsized to a 22ft Seasport and a 200hp Yami. After talking with my mechanic he agreed with my logic, for longer powerhead life it would be better to run in a lower gear. If Yamaha says 5300 max, slect a prop that will turn 5500...JUST DON'T TAKE IT UP PAST 5300!!! The result is that at lower rpms and coming out of the hole the engine will work easier, like a car or truck works easier in 3rd gear than in 4th. Yes you'll loose a couples miles an hour of top end speed, but unless your racing...who cares. I'll take long engine life every time."

"Thanks fellas,I feel better about this older and louder engine and spending those bucks on new powerhead.Still wondering what happened to old motor to cause rod bearing failure.Hav`nt checked oil output yet its been a little cold here.Hav`nt had it very long so i don`t know how it was taken care of.Some have suggested premixing oil but i don`t really want to do this.I don`t believe i had it wot to check rpm.I`ll find out when i get it broke-in a little.I useally ran them about 4000 rpm.The motor that failed was always hard to start,i`m going to try to correct this before break-in.When i got boat in 5/08 it would not idle right,i pulled carbs and cleaned i don`t see how it ran at all. That took care of idle, but that one engine was still hard to start, maybe still in carbs. Thanks for your help."
