The manual says the lower case oil capacity is about 610ml, however when i recently drained and refilled, it took about 1000ml before the oil stated to flow from the top plug. can someone please advise why this extra capacity.

Whatever it takes to fill to the top hole is what my manual says. It's normally about a quart, so your 1000ml is correct. What manual are you using?
