I am in the uk and would like to research a early Yamaha 5 HP outboard
model 5A. how do you decode the seil no
where can I get parts from in the UK

5A is the model identity. The motor should also be marked with its primary identification number. It will begin with the number 6.

If parts are still available you can get them from any Yamaha UK outboard motor dealer.

hello many thanks, engine serial number is 644S 61411,any idea which year this was made

1973.

Take a look at any 5 HP Yamaha parts catalog and compare the markings seen on your carburetor. That will give you a clue that you are on the right track. I believe the carburetor will have a 6E0 mark.

Ain't that the truth. When stuff is known it is all so easy. When not known it can seem all but impossible.

But I love it when thoroughly frustrated, about to give up, and suddenly the light comes on.
