"I have a 2007 yamaha 50 hp 2

"I have a 2007 yamaha 50 hp 2 stroke motor and from new this motor seems well under powered. Looking at the specs, this motor is identical to the 40 except the length.
Does anyone know for sure how to tell if you have a 40 or 50 motor apart from the cover and model tag on the clamp bracket.
Any info would be wonderful. }"

"Ive had lots of problems with this motor from new. The shop wired up the rev counter wrong from new so I ran it in for the first hour at 6000 revs instead of 3000. Then after the the first hour when you stooped to do a bit of fishing, then started the motor to move on, it would start and idle fine then with a few revs would run rough and if you gave it more power it would stop. They pulled the carbs down and found nothing. I suspected the ecu but they dont think it was that. I now run a propulse 4 bladed variable pitch prop and even at its lowest pitch it will only get to 4000 revs and 30 mph. This is on a 4.2 mtr Quintrex boat and very light at 160 kilos. The last motor I had on this was a mercury 30 and it ran at 27 mph.
Anyway as I am in New Zealand it may have different numbers than you guy's but here they are.
6H5K 50HETO
carbs are as follows
Top carb, 62X00UG12
middle carb, 62X00UG14
Bottom carb is same as top.
Don't know why the are different and this motor has only done 10 hours now."

sounds like they did not prop

sounds like they did not prop the boat right
are they yami certified?
as the tach thing it was probably a switch in the back

"you can change the pitch on t

"you can change the pitch on this prop, excellent things, but this motor losses power and speed every time I take it out and yes it was the micro switches at the back they switched wrong. I think running it in at that revs, when new, it has taken the tension out of the rings maybee. t needs to go back for a warranty claim because the half full oil light keeps flashing even when its totally full, so will get them to give it a compression test.
I don't suppose you would know what the numbers are supposed to be on the carbs? and do you know why they are different numbers?
One strange thing about this when I looked in my manual, about specs on this motor, everything is the same for the 40 and 50 hp except I noticed the length, not height, but length on the 50 is 1 inch longer than the 40.Thats why I would like to know a way of telling between the 2. I feel the difference between the original 30 mercury and the 50 Yamaha, one would think it is only a 40. Possibly a factory mistake."

merc and yami motors are the same

i would take it back to the dealer and have them check it

you mean the yellow light on oil reserve

"No it has a LCD gauge, and ha

"No it has a LCD gauge, and has 3 levels for the oil level, almost empty, half full and full. The full one goes out when half full and the half full one flashes. When it gets down to the the almost empty one it is supposed to only rev out to 2000 revs so you can get home without useing to much oil.
My Mercury was a Mercury Lite, in other words a Tohatsu."

"Yes your right, I think I wi

"Yes your right, I think I will trade this motor in and get a 50 4 stroke yamaha, or an E-Tec"

"Shayne, yes take it back to t

"Shayne, yes take it back to the dealer. But, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off though. A 50 horse 2 stroke Yami is a decent engine - better kick and overall performance than the 4 stroke.

The difference between the 2 carb numbers is because they are jetted slightly differently. In the 3 carb set-up's on the larger motors you will have 3 different carb numbers - that is totally normal...."

"thanks very much for your adv

"thanks very much for your advice. What do think about a 60 hp E-tec thought if I decided to go this way, I might as well get the 60 as it weighs the same as the 40 and 50. I am a boat builder myself and work at Stabi-Craft marine. Check their website. The mechanics at work said the E-tecs give nothing but trouble in the larger sizes, infact, we have just replaced 2 175hp with new ones under warranties one with 60 hours and one with 80 hours. The motors are totally shot and beyond repair."

"Shayne, I got to take part in

"Shayne, I got to take part in the end of a year long test on a 60 ETEC, and see the summary of results. Quite impressive. However, after doing a fair bit of research on the direct injected motors (going to power a new boat with one myself), decided to go with a Tohatsu.

The technologies are roughly the same, but the Mercs and Tohatsu's use low pressure injectors where the Ev's and the Yami's use high pressure.

Figure there isn't much to go wrong with them anyhow (if built right), but the low pressure means just a couple less things in the long run that could create a problem.

But ultimately it does come down to service available. If you have good support for an Evinrude, it is an impressive motor - but only time will tell what the durability is like on all these new models..."
