yamaha 40elk idle

i just got this yanaha 40hp and it runs out very nice,when put in gear to wot very smooth
idle sucks will idle maybe 10-30 sec this is what it sounds like mmm- jerk-mmm-jerk-mmm-jerk then dies lol
some times when it dies it has a chearp sound?
in gear seems to idle just fine trolling any help thank you
 
ok we have a fix, clean carbs but was not needed stator plate was sticking took of flywheel and cleaned,timing was not set right from last owner are shop ?
i set adv which is WOT 25 Btdc not running look under flywheel there is a mark, then set retard in Neutral to 5 Atdc . / then do a sync & link ,
which at neutral pull little rod off going to timing rocker, back off idle screw, adjust rod put back on, /ok mixture screws on side of carbs set at
1-3/4 turns, /then back off idle screw just touching took to river hooked up a tach was only 100 rpms off lol nice
 
i am running this 40hp long shaft on a 1650 tunnel hull low joh boat, gps says 27 mph, rpms says 5900 on lab scope hooked to spark plugwire
prop size is 11 1/4x14-g what do i need to do ? 11x16 11x15 ? and boat seems to drag a little in rear. ?
