"I recently changed the water pump on my Yamaha 40hp 4-stroke (F40LTRY). It seemed to go smoothly, but I must've done something wrong when I put it back together. I'm hoping for some advice.
There are two problems:
1) neutral isn't quite neutral any more - the engine starts fine, but I can hear a slight grind, like it's almost in gear. After running in forward, I have to bring the throttle back to just behind neutral to get into neutral.
2) more worrisome - when I put the engine into reverse, it kicks like a mule, into and out of gear.
I realize I'm going to have to drop the lower unit off again, but I'm not sure what to look for, and what to do differently when I put it back together. Any advice appreciated."
