Yamaha 2005 F40 tilt piston

Hello all, I am looking for someone who can help me with my new motor.The motor is in great shape and seems to work as intended. I recently installed it on my current boat and i use the manual tilt lock lever to raise and lower the motor. Please help me as I am not sure how the tilt lock lever is supposeto work. I read the manual but it doesnt not give much explanation. I do believe you must tilt the motor up to a certain angle for best results in speed and power? I took the boat out for its first test run after new motor. I adjusted tilt trim manually to where I thought it looked level. Everything worked great until I applied full power then the motor sunk all the way down. The boat achieved good speed but the with the motor sunken completely down it seemed like it was angled way too far down into the water. I am unsure how this tilt function is intended to be used and if I am doing correctly or not. Looking for an expert who can give me some insights. The piston does not sink over time and I can not force it down by applying my own weight to it so it seems it is fuctioning properly. I suspect it must leak or have air in it and cannot sustain the load of the motor under full power. Any help diagnosing this would be greatly appreciated!
 
There are five holes in each mounting bracket. Is there not a rod that goes from one bracket to the other in one pair of those holes? Or perhaps a bolt in each of those brackets that will stop the down and in movement of the motor?

Not as far as I can tell. Hoping someone knows. There are 5 holes but just but and bold thru both sides. The only way to move the motor up and down is the black lever on the left side. You can lift the lever and move the motor up or down and then put the lever down and it will lock the strut into place. And it seems very solid except the motor just sinks when full power is applied. I have attached pics.

I've looked at the manual and it specifies manual tilt vs hydro tilt vs electric obviously I dont have electric trim but I am confused the difference between hydro vs manual trim. The diagram you posted and this is indeed what mine looks like. There is not a bar that goes into the holes as show in the picture
 
Is the situation that the hydro unit once held the motor in the position to which you set it but it is now no longer doing that?
 
It's a new motor to me and I've only tested it on the water once. It will hold position when parked and does not sink over time. It only sinks when I applied full power on the lake. Not sure if this means its bad or if there is a a additional lock missing. Hoping someone knows. After looking at parts diagram it doesn't appear I am missing anything.
 
I have researched this part to the extent possible. Seems the lever is pulled up to allow the motor to be raised or lowered manually but when the lever is pushed downward it should cause the motor to lock in place. Make sure the handle is securely attached to the hydraulic unit. If the handle works but it no longer locks then the hydraulic unit is defective.
