Yamaha 2 Stroke 55hp - Full throttle on idle

Hi guys,

After I successfully managed to identify my outboard (with your help) as a 55BE from 1992, I encountered another possible issue...
I noticed that when I start the outboard, with the choke pushed in, it will rev to max rpm. Decided to take the carburetor cover off, and noticed that the flaps are fully opened with the choke pushed in and they close as I pull the choke. Should it not be in reverse?

Seems to be running ok, but only with the choke pulled out, to limit the air flow.

The black box with the spring that is connected to the carburetor cover is a simple mechanism activated by a flip switch on the control unit, just under the key. It seems to slightly open the air passage, same as the choke. The flip is "auto-return", it wont stay on if you remove your finger. Any idea what that might be?

By flaps do you mean the choke plates?

Open when the choke knob is in. Closed when the choke knob is pulled out.

The throttle valves are mostly closed when the throttle handle is retarded and mostly fully open when the throttle handle is fully forward.
 
What you refer to as a black box I am guessing is the choke solenoid. An electrical means to activate the choke plates as opposed to manually pulling the choke knob to activate the choke plates.

A motor that won't run unless the choke plates are activated is indicative of carburetors that need to be cleaned and adjusted.
 
The carburetor air passage is restricted when the choke plates are activated. Closed that is. When the choke plates are not activated they should have no restriction on the air flow through the carburetors.

Yes,you are correct! I’m new at all the outboard and boat stuff,but doing my best to learn .

Behind the choke flaps,further back,are the throttle flaps. Those are almost closed at idle and open fully with throttle ( engine off).

This is the same answer I got over on Reddit.
Everyone seems to say that I need to take the carbs off and clean them properly! Never did this before,but watched so many videos and read a lot about it…also not a complete idiot (hopefully)…maybe I won’t **** it up too much haha

Have u any tips for me before I take the carbs off? I know they are different and I should remember the top and bottom one. Any other tips to removal and reassembly?

Any help much appreciated!
