HI. I have a 1958 Evinrude 5

HI. I have a 1958 Evinrude 50hp V4. I am trying to replace the waterpump impeller. The motor has 3 sections and none of them want to come apart. Any suggestions?!? I can get them to where there is about a half inch apart and no further.

is the shift rod small and held on by a cotter pin?
 
The shift rod is 1/4" dia

The shift rod is 1/4" diameter. There is a plate on the side of the motor. You remove the plate. Then there is another plate that when removed gets you to the connector.
