Maybe I'll machine the hole out to fit the seal I got.. getting old trying to get a seal for this.. everyone tells me they now all about it but no one has yet come up with the right seal..

Hard to believe all this misinformation I say.----But on this site you can find a chart with seal part numbers and OD and shaft size.----Easy as can be.

That's what everyone keeps telling me but I can't find it on this site.. can ya point me to where it might be?

Who is slamming folks.. not me.. I'm frustrated is all.. People telling me how easy it is to find something like I'm a moron.. (that's how you come across) show me on this site where they list the seal for a QD-17 10hp.. you said it was easy...

Just a thought, do you happen to have any bearing supply places near you? I am able to source all my lower oil seal/o rings through a local bearing supplier. I either bring the seals in and they match em up or I go with a list of dimensions and they find them for me.

I've been following this thread off & on.................

QD-17 = 1956 10hp = The gearcase pictured in a previous post is indeed the normal 1956 10hp Johnson gearcase that DOES NOT incorporate the additional housing/bushing/seal assembly under the water pump... BUT... rather simply incorporates the top driveshaft seal as part of the gearcase.

Two seals are involved.... the top driveshaft seal and the propshaft seal. I assume by the graphic that you are searching for the "propshaft" seal? If so, are you also still searching for the top driveshaft seal?

In my 1956 QD-17 parts book, the seals are listed as follows of which I've checked for superseded numbers, the last number being entered are good numbers as of my last price book (2010)

Driveshaft seal: 004162--> 307563-->321788

Propshaft seal: 302495

This is not a seal part number for the 1956 10hp gearcase. No idea how this got in the conversation.
302545--> 313284

"O" Ring: 302493 (For head assembly below)

Gearcase head assembly: 375751 --> 383757 (Propshaft housing, bushing, O Ring, seal)

Being retired, my latest book is 2010. It's possible the numbers have been superseded further along in the past 9 years that I am not aware of.

I was trying to stay OEM but that's seems to be a problem with this 56.. I'm not the only one, in my days of searching for seals I have found others with the same problem.. Waiting for the place to open where I got the last set.. everything else was good, shift seal and all the orings were ok.. just the output shaft seal is the problem.. I gave the last guy the dimensions he sounded like he had seen this problem before so I took him for his word, that's what he does.. Thanks for the info much appreciated..

302495 will not fit. it's 1.25 OD that's the one I just got.. I got the other number 302545 for here..

https://www.vintageoutboard.com/col...er-units/products/22-30001-gear-case-seal-kit

"22-30001 - Gear case seal kit, with 1.25 OD propeller shaft seal, fits Johnson/Evinrude; Johnson QD models 10 hp 1949 -1957, 1956 15 hp, 1957 18 hp (except FDE11K use 302545 p/s seal); Evinrude 1956 15hp, 1957 10 hp to #11000, 18hp to #22000 after this # use p/s seal 313284 1.125 OD.

I crossed 302545 on the SKF web site ( http://www2.chicago-rawhide.com/popup_parts_lookup_457012.htm)and the dimensions are good..

As I said, the seal was changed mid-year 1957. Pre-change was 302495. Post-change was 302545 (313284). 302495 was the larger one. 302545 (313284) is 1.128". If your 1956 is the small one, somebody has installed a post-change gearcase head/bearing seal in it.

Simple.
