Wrapped line around my 25EFI prop, now I can’t find neutral

Prolly not the first person to do this, but line got wrapped up, and now there is no detent on the tiller handle for neutral. Hopefully I messed up a shear pin or something easy:rolleyes: Motor is a 2006 25hp EFI Mercury tiller.

here’s what happened...

Finished up fishing with my kids and their friend. Got ready to leave, put it in neutral, fired up, put it in gear, and engine stopped. “Odd” I thought, so I put it back in neutral, started the engine, put it in gear, engine dies. Now the throttle/gear selector loses its detent, The motor won’t recognize neutral, and won’t start.

any thoughts on what I buggered up? Weather is finally nice up here, and I want to keep my kids fishing!

FYI, I’m a “oil change/spark plug/carb clean” level mechanic, not an “engine rebuild” level guy,

Ouch sorry to hear that! Good news is, if you can't find a gear its most likely the shifting cable is broken. Try and engage the gears manually see if that works. First problem to solve is making the engine recognize neutral. Then tackle why it dies in gear (im guessing there's extra line wrapped around prop that you can't see, so engine needs more power to turn prop but it isn't getting the fuel needed) Remove it and inspect.

I turned my prop by hand, and that did something to where I can now change gears on the tiller handle, YES! When in neutral, the starter switch works. I don’t have equipment yet to start it, (ears or a trash can full of water) but it does seem to engage. I’ll post again if there’s more of a problem. Tanks!
