"Is it infact better for my engine to run at or close to WOT than to run at lower revs and have my engine labouring? I have a 1996 200 Rude O/Pro and am getting 5400rpm at WOT but am more often than not running/cruising at 4500rpm, Engine does not sound to be labouring. This is the sweet spot I have found. Am I harming my engine running at this RPM?

Will I dramatically increase my fuel consumption by increasing rpm?

Thanks in advance"

"Wide Open Throttle (for those who might not recognize WOT) consumes a great amount of fuel. The engine is designed to run WOT for prolonged periods of time BUT with the price of fuel today, why go that route.

There is such a setting which is called "Crusing Range" arrived at by first obtaining a planing condition at full throttle, then dropping the throttle back to approximately 3/4 throttle. The spark advance stays at full spark advance BUT the throttle butterflies drop back considerably.

One can see what I speak of by having the engine not running but in forward gear, with the throttle set to full, and with the carburetor face plate removed, then watching the throttle butterfly(s) drop back as you back off to approximately 3/4 throttle. You'll notice that the spark advance stays put.

I can't state what the fuel consumption difference would be now but years ago I personally made the comparison running a 6 gallon tank dry at full throttle, then another 6 gallon tank at Crusing Range, using a 75hp engine.

At full throttle = 6 gallons in 45 minutes.

At crusing range = 6 gallons in 1 hour, 45 minutes.

I suspect the difference today would be similar. If your boat will stay on a plane at this setting, why waste the fuel UNLESS you're racing or faced with outrunning a storm, somethion of that nature."

"Thanks Joe, That was the answer I was hoping for.
Info I have received from reading posts on this site and answers to personal posts have always been very helpfull.

Hard to get a straight answer from the dealer. Always trying to get you into a new engine some way or other.

Thankyou"
