"I’m looking for some help before I take my motor to the local dealer.

I have a 2005 Merc 60 bigfoot EFI. The motor is on a Macgregor power sailer. Needless to say most of the time I spend sailing and just use the motor to and from the dock, however, other times we like to kneeboard and tube around.

A month ago we were going to do just that, but the motor would cutout and sputter at WOT. Reducing the RPM’s to 2000 or less and she’d run just fine, but anything higher and she’d perform like it was running out of fuel, or like it had lots of water in the fuel.

I switched tanks and the problem never went away. My breather vents on each tank were open. I pulled both supply fittings on both tanks and checked each supply tube for blockage. Nothing. I completely drained both tanks of fuel, and let them sit in the hot sun for over a month to ensure no moisture was remaining in the tanks. I drained the fuel filter (it was clean & no water) I drained the fuel supply hose from the tank to the motor along with draining the bulb. Yesterday I put a few gallons of new clean fuel in each tank and gave her a whirl. Brought her up to WOT and after a couple of minutes the same old thing again. She’d sputter, and sometimes quit. (More sputtering than running). Bring the RPM’s down to 2000 or less, and she’d run just fine. I even tried to pump the bulb while the sputtering episode, all to no avail. I don’t have a manual for this motor, and I’m not a stranger to automotive and motorcycle rebuilding, but this has me baffled. Any ideas? Fuel pump comes to mind. Bad injectors? I’m open for any suggestions before I take it to the dealer.

Thanks in advance,
Harrison"

"Hi there...

EFI with carbs?

Try running some fuel system cleaner through the system, just make sure that it is compatible with 2stroke if the motor is one...

Problem solved. The motor has 2 fuel pumps in it. The first one is a low pressure (5-6 psi) mechanical pump that takes the fuel from the tank to the motor. The second pump is an electric pump that ups the pressure to 40-45 psi for the injectors. Problem: bad low pressure fuel pump.
