Won't shift into forward

Im not sure why all of a sudden it won't go into forward. The cradle sits about in the middle of the gears when it's in forward. Basically goes into reverse when in neutral and won't shift all the way into reverse because the clutch dog max's out in the reverse gear. Could the upper shift shaft be off, causing this? It a 69 25hp Johnson

Sounds like the shift rod grooves are not aligned properly with the bolt holes in the brass shift connector.
