Won't idle anymore

Pu the boat in at the Marina (near empty gas), filled up and instantly my engine would not stay running and would not idle. I took out anyway and it intermittently hesitated as I increased the speed but when I got up to near full speed it did just fine. When I slowed back down and got to idle, it ran rough and when I turned off the key it kept trying to run.
A friend called it dieseling....?
I cleaned out the fuel filter at the carb and plan to clean out the filter in the fuel pump.
Does it sound like moinsture in the tank since it was empty for a week or maybe water in the fuel I filled up with?
I also just found out that I don't have a Water separator between the tank and the fuel pump.
Any thoughts?

I think you hit the nail on the head. Get three bottles of HEET from the autoparts store and dump it into the fuel tank. If the boat is on a trailer drive it around the block several times make several quick stop/goes to mix the fuel in the tank. You may have to remove the top from the carb to get the water out of the bowl. Install a fuel/water separator and keep a few spare filters onboard. I always use Stabil w/each fillup; it preserves the fuel for a year. A double dose keeps it fresh for up to two years. There are different types of Stabil; read the label for the one you need.

Whats in that heet, alcohol maybe ? And the gas now is what ? What you describe happening to your boat maybe the idle circuit clogged up.

So start at the tank and pull the fuel pcikup tube and amke sure the screen on the boattom is clean, then blow thru the the one way valve make sure that aint clogged. Put it back in.

Then clean the fuel pump filter, and rebuild the carb. Want the link to the post i made about rebuilding carbs just ask.

Then run it and post back the result.

But the first thing you should do before anything is check to see if the choke is opening all the way when the motor is warm.

1. What does HEET do?
2. okay on the fuel pickup tube.
3. Will install a new fuel pump filter.
4. Will install a new water/fuel separator.
5. YES, please send the link about rebuiding carb's.
6. I took the Spark Arrestor off right after I got back and the "flap" was stright up.

I just have to say.... I have been reading alot of these threads and this forum is great.

[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif] ok the idle circuit is still clogged.

Get yourself down to a auto parts store, get a can of berrymans carb soak comes with a screen in the can, like a deep fryer.

Also get a can of compressed carb cleaner. And a carb rebuild kit.

With a clean area on a table or bench i place a old cookie sheet with sides.

Break down the carb and remove all the rubber.

Remove the jets they should just screw out.

Everything goes into the berrymans, let soak for a few hours.

Remove the parts from the berrymans, start with the lower carb housing and blow it dry with compressed air, it clean?

Piece by piece build it, make sure every passage is clean blow it dry and use compressed can carb clear blow it dry again.

Jets clean, Float, floating no gas in it ?

Push the float under water and if you see bubbles it's time to replace it.

Ok when you install the pin in the forks that hold the float are they pressing on the float tounge and not allowing the float to move freely ?

So if you did your job correctly the carb should operate freely, and when you install the adjustment screws be gentle.

Do not bend the tips. All the way in with them gently and out 2 turns to start.

Final adjustment on the water.

Have someone else drive about 2000 rpm maybe a little more and you do the final adjustment.

If you take your time and there are no distractions, you should be ok.

Good luck !

Water in the gas is my thought. Not an outboard so Heet should`nt affect anything. I use rubbing alcohol, same as heet and cheaper!

never use alcohol to try to get water out of E10

use a water seperator - Racor or similar and change the filter a couple of times.

Installed a new Fuel Pump Filter - the old looked like it had been squashed on one side.
Installed a new water fuel separator.
Put two cans of seafoam in the tank and then added about 10 gallons to top off the tank.
I tightened the idle screw 1/4-turn and the engine idles fine now.
However, the engine bogs down (like it starved of fuel) whenever I take off....but once I get in the upper rpm's it runs just fine.
So I brought the boat home, gonna check the fuel tank screen, empty the water separator into a clear glass to see if there is any water.
Next, look at possibly rebuilding the carb.

Thank you for all the help!

Fuel Tank Screen - Clear
Water Separator - No Water inside
Opened and removed the Carb. - Couple rust spots and some trash in the bowl. The fuel accelerator pump rubber gasket looked worn.
Anyway, off to get a re-build kit.

Thanks for "Good Luck" Chief, boy is this a steep learning curve.

Re-Built the Carb (with help from my Brother In-Law), we installed it last Friday and also put in new spark plugs (since I had them).
Sweeeeeeeet, it fired right up and it rev's up and idles really smooth and we should be able to put it in the water this weekend for the all important test.
Signed,
