won't go 86-89 70 hp merc

I have a 70 hp. Merc. it will start and idle fine and run up to top rpm the first time then when I throttle back and try to throttle up again it kills the engine and all I can get it to do is idle any attempt to throttle up will stop the engine. New plugs, new stator, compression is good, rebuilt fuel pump. Any ideas people?

So it runs fine at first, you throttle back and it idles fine but you give her more throttle and she dies.

It will restart, but if you advance past idle it dies again.

Does it "stop dead" or is it like shutting it down (slowly dies out)?
 
Yes well after I run it up the first time and slow down to an idle and then try to throttle up again it is like I hit a kill switch. If I pull back to an idle quick enough it will run at an idle, as soon as I try any throttle at all it will kill the engine unless the throttle is returned to the idle position. Bry
 
Run with a timing light one cylinder at a time and see if there is a spark issue.----Steady spark will be an uninterupted flashing of the light.-Are you running with oil injection ? Has it been checked to make sure it is delivering the correct amount of oil ?-------Cooling system has had proper maintenance ?
 
There's no accelerator pumps on most outboards (unfortunately) hence their tendency to bog if the idle mixture is a bit lean. That motor tends to bog more than most (for some reason) so the idle adjustment is critical.

Thanks for the info I will check this out and let you know. Now I had the drive replaced on the starter motor as it would not disengage after starting and wore out the gear @ the top well now the starter will not stay engaged properly to start the main motor. Any ideas would be appreciated. Bry
