"I have a 1997 four winns with a 4.3 engine, when starting the engine cold and leaving it run to warm up, it will never warm up, thus in colder weather the choke does not operate proper and the engine usually stalls when put into gear. If you manage to get going, the temp. will come up after a few miles, tried everything, still ????"

"Assuming the engine is raw water cooled, you may want to double check that the bypass orifice in the thermostat housing is not blocked. Also, you may want to verify with an infrared thermometer that the engine is indeed as cool as the temperature gauge indicates."

A little off topic...

I have been thinking of getting an infrared thermometer for a while now. I am under the impression that they measure the surface temp of something...how does that relate to the temp of the water running through the engine? Where would you typically point the infrared themometer to measure the water temp in a raw water cooled engine? Any under USD$50 suggestions to purchase?

"Bob, those gadgets are coming

"Bob, those gadgets are coming down dramatically in price. I bought mine for about $100 less than 2 years ago, and now you see them around for less than $50 at Canadian Tire.

What those gadgets measure is the infrared radiation emitted from a surface, which is directly proportional to temperature. This means that if the water temperature circulating through the engine has been constant for a few minutes (the more, the better) that means that the head or block in the area where the water circulates would be approximately at the same temperature as the water.

Regardich where to measure, I would start pointing the laser at the same spot where you have your current temperature sender installed. You can try other areas in the block and head and see if you see any hotter spot (but stay away fromthe exhaust ports, they can give very high readings)."

"Thanks El. I have to balance

"Thanks El. I have to balance the cost versus how often I will use it, which I cannot imagine will be too often. I was unable to find the ne you reference above online and get a ballpark price, but this Radio Shack one might be just what I need for my very limited use (and budget). I hinted to my girlfriend that it would make a nice Xmas gift.

providing the thermostat is properly installed there should not be a problem unless there is a hot-water heater connected?

"LAST YEAR I FOUND A PIECE OF RUBBER JAMMED IN THE THERMOSTAT BY-PASS PORT, I THOUGHT FOR SURE THIS WAS THE PROBLEM, BUT STILL NO WARM UP AT IDLE. THE PIECE OF RUBBER WAS PART OF THE PUMP WHICH WAS REPLACED. I EVEN TRIED RESTRICTING THE WATER SUPPLY HOSE FROM THE PUMP BUT DECIDED THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO..."

You have an issue of too much

You have an issue of too much flow....A restriction will make an engine hotter. How hot does it get at full temp range?

"AFTER A FEW MILES OF RUNNING

"AFTER A FEW MILES OF RUNNING AT CRUISING SPEED THE TEMP. WILL USUALLY COME UP TO ABOUT 160 DEGREES. I'M WONDERING IF THIS MODEL HAS SOME SORT OF DESIGN PROBLEM IN THE COOLING SYSTEM BUT NO ONE ELSE SEEMS TO HAVE HAD THIS TROUBLE, MAYBE THIS BOAT WAS MADE FOR FLORIDA??"
