Wonbt shift out of forward since replacing water pump

"I have a 1978 mercury 80 hp,m

"I have a 1978 mercury 80 hp,model 800,4 cylinder,s/n 5004670 and have replaced the water pump impellar 4 or 5 times since i have had it with no problem.i just reeplaced the impellar again and the motor will not shift out of forward.what position should the shift shaft in the foot be in,should i be able to move it by hand?any help would be great and appreciated.thanks in advance.you could call me if you would,thanks again for the help.Bill 770-718-9160"
 
Pull it apart again----put con

Pull it apart again----put control in nuetral and use a vicegrip to put the lower in nuetral and put it together.You shift shaft turned on you when " you were not watching"
