"Hi I have a 1989 Mariner 75 H

"Hi I have a 1989 Mariner 75 HP. Changed props from 21 pitch to a 19. Took it out for spring warmup, hit top speed and it slipped out of gear and gears will not engage again. When I put it into forward, the prop turns slowly, but no "clunk" into gear. Same for reverse. Engine runs fine, throttles fine...any ideas?? Thanks"

"The splines in the joint between crankshaft and vertical driveshaft might be worn down. Or the drive shaft might be broken. If so, the motor is running like in neutral. But since the vertical shaft isn't spinning, the water pump isn't working. You can see there is no water coming out from the tell tale.
If you drop the lower unit,(can be difficult) you can see the splines of the shaft are worn. The crankshaft splines seem to give up first.
You might have to repair, or replace both crankshaft and vertical drive shaft.
Expensive.
Let's hope it is something cheaper.

"Thanks for both posts. I never thought of the hub because it was replaced this year. But I checked and put the motor into gear (off of course LOL) and it doesn't lock and clicks one way and turns the other without the bolt moving. Same for reverse. I will remove it Wednesday.
Just a note, why is the hub, at least the one I bought, made out of plastic if it needs to take torque? Why not metal? Or did I install it wrong. Can't see how, but you never know.
