I recently got a 1996 Johnson 9.9hp 2 stroke with a pontoon I purchased. It is MOD #: J1ORELEDD. The control box it came with is in rough shape - previous owner said key did not work, and the fast idle lever is not on it. When the box is closed tight, the shift handle does not move, but if you loosen it it does. Previous owner installed an "off/on" switch on the starter for electric start.
Manual it came with is general Johnson, not this specific model. I have read that 1996 and on have the modular wiring system, but this one has the pre-1996 red circular plug wiring system. I want to update the wiring and control box but am confused. Does this model use the pre-1996 wiring, even though it is a 1996? or did the previous owner rig up the old wiring, where the new modular wiring should have been used?
any advice/suggestions is appreciated!
PS. as of right now what I THINK - is I would get a new box with the modular wiring system, and an adapter cable to plug into the motor - BUT not sure if his key problem came from the box, or something not hooked up right to the starter?
