"1990 50 hp Johnson. With ign. key on gauges don't work, no start, tilt on shift lever doesn't operate. Tilt on engine works as do accessories (horn, lights etc.)Cleaned all terminals under cowl of any corrosion replacing as needed. When key inadvertantly left on overnight I returned to find oil horn check sounding, gauges working and engine started. Got it out of water and problem continues. Any suggestions?"

"Jim.... That sounds like you're picking up the ground circuit of those components at the black/yellow wire at the ignition switch, which by the way will also destroy the powerpack within a short time.

The power (voltage) for those components (exepting the PTT switch) usually connects to the "A" (accessory) terminal of the ignition switch so that voltage is applied only when the key is in the ON or START position BUT the ground lead of those components should be connected to a grounding source that leads directly to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.

The voltage source of the PTT switch, if you want it to operate even with the key OFF should have its own fused power source directly from the battery.
