I have a new 5.0 Mercruiser that is fuel injected. My question is do I need to somehow fog the engine. I read where you can connect an external fuel tank with a mixture of gas and oil. I am not comfortable with this going thru the fuel injectors. Also after adding stabilizer to the fuel I would want to run this thru the engine and going with an external tank would defeat this purpose. Is it okay to just run the engine for 5 minutes to get the stabilized fuel through the system and count on the engine oil to protect the cylinders over the winter? Thank you Bob

Pull the plugs and spray a few

Pull the plugs and spray a few secs worth of fogging oil into each cylinder. Crank engine a few turns and be done with it.

"you can always pull a vacuum line and using a straw on your can of fog, spray fogger into the air stream."

why wouldn't you

"Robert,
why wouldn't you want to fog the mpi the way the merc manual states? the manual states to use the gas/oil/stablizer mixture through external tank."

Robert: If it was mine and I was uncomfortable performing the task highly recommended by the mfg. then I would take it to the MAN and pay the fee to have it done. HE is there for those that need him. There is no shame in asking for help or paying to have it done. The fuel injectors get a dose of 2 cycle oil to lubricate them over the down time. I was not aware of that process until someone with MPI advised me. Have it done; cheap insurance and peace of mind.

"Robert, the mix is a 5 gal batch of fuel, stabilizer and 2 oz of 2 stroke oil. I got a outboard plastic 5 gal fuel tank. you pull the water separator and then fill the new one with the cocktail. then remove the fuel tank inlet hose from the separator and install the hose from the 5 gal can. I cut the end off and just slide it on the barb and tighten with hose clamp. then run the motor for 10 to 15 mins. thats it.... but if you feel you cant, then do get the "man" to do it, injectors are expensive."

"Not to worry if there is a little 2 stroke oil in those injectors. If there is any concern next spring, just put some injector cleaner in the first 1 or 2 tanks of gas. I put cleaners in all small motors to give the carbs/injectors a quick clean up. Riding lawnmower, string trimmer, ATV, whatever, they all get a shot every once in a while. I stick it in my boat too and all is well.

Just thinking out loud
