"Mauro, add fuel stablizer to the gas and run the motor to let it get through the system (stops things from getting gummed up).

You can also spray some fogging oil at this point right into the carbs. I don't do this myself, but instead pull the sparkplugs when the carbs are drained and spray it right into the cylinders - also a shot of it (or WD40) over the powerhead and wires etc sure doesn't hurt.

Then at the very least either disconnect the gas line and let the motor run itself out, or pull the carbs and drain them.

Also, this is a good time of year to change the lower unit oil (and impeller if it's due). If there is any water present, you will catch it now so it won't freeze on you.

Store it in it's normal upright position. If still on the boat, trim it all the way down, don't leave it tilted.

The last thing I do, is put in new plugs - may seem silly at this time of year, but the soon as the ice is out my motors have new plugs, gear oil, impeller (if required) etc - they are ready to go..

While others are trying to book some time at the incredibly busy local marina (or waiting for guys like me to get back to shore to hook them up), I'm on the water

"Graham,

Should I fill the gas tank and add stabilizer, or drain remaining fuel after motor is winterized?

"Mauro, it used to be the gene

"Mauro, it used to be the general thought that either way would work fine.

However, just read a good article which stated that if you are running E10 fuel (10% ethanol/alcohol) - or think that you may be, that you should completely drain the tank.

It absorbs and separates water so easily that even with stablizer they believe there is still a chance of ending up with water in the gas.

So totally empty is the "new" way to go....

I have always stored empty, using the leftover in my pick-up truck, which isn't too fussy about what it burns
