Winterizing my 71 Evinrude outboard

Hi.

I have a 1971 Evinrude 50 HP outboard motor (2 stroke) which I got with a boat off Craigslist.

I'm going to be winterizing it soon to store it up for the...winter. :)

I know I need to fog the carburetor ports with the motor running, and I've also been told to fog the spark plug ports. I know I also need to drain the lower compartment an re-fill it with engine oil.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I live in the Hayward Lakes Area now.

I have heated garage for my boat now, but in days past when I didn't, this is what I'd do for winter.

Fill my gas tank and give it a heavy dose of Stabil. Non blended gas is all I use, it's readily available up here. ( Lund Pro V with 32 gallon on board tank.)
Run it with muffs to get the fuel mix in carbs.
Pull the plugs and spray Storage seal in cylinders & turn it over a few times to get water out of water pump & engine.
Drain & refill lower unit.
Pull batteries and store in warm area w/trickle chargers attached.
Put boat on blocks to get tires off floor and reduce tire pressure to 10psi
Remove all electronics and store in warm place
Remove MinnKota from bow and release it from cradle and put on floor of boat. Keeps the cord from being stretched out.

This is what I always did to "winterize" my boat and it worked well over the years for me.

I came from the Woodruff/Minocqua area.

One thing I used to do on the winterizing is get the motor warmed up on muffs and then spray fogging oil through the carb throats until the motor smoked like hell. Then shut it off. This coats the whole inside of the motor with oil. All bearings and ect.

Your right on that. There is a valve on the side of the motor that you can hook a can of storage seal to an inject it there. My boat has lived in a heated garage at 55 deg. for 11 years now. When I winterize it now all I do is lower unit and spray the cylinders. I still block it up but I don't have to remove the electronics or battery. So easy now. If it's -10 and I'm bored, I can go wax it if I want.
