Will not run

Ok fellas, I need sum real help getting this motor running. Last year I bought a 15ft flatbottom '76 35hp evinrude from my work buddy after he took me out on it twice. I took it out one time n broke it. Had to call him to tow it in. I found several problems when I got home. First the lower unit was seized up. I soaked it with wd40 over night and broke it lose and got it to turn very smooth both directions. Next, I found that the waterpump needed to be replaced cuz it was burned up and cloggd the waterline with mud. I replaced that and thuroughly cleaned it out. I had the motor running good, but would not have water flow, then when I replaced the water pump I couldnt get it to start. so I removed the lower unit and bam it turned on like a charm. but when I put it back it turns, but wil not start. I've been told several things might be wrong.... bent shaft? bad lower unit? but I have also been told that I might have not exactly put the shaft back in exactly how it should be... I could really use some help to get back on the water. I want to learn this motor. I have no previous boat experience, but i want to get good enough to take my sons with me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

If the lower unit was siezed then there may be major damage inside it,---A binding lower unit would put too much drag on it for proper starting as you have found out.-----How is the oil in the lower unit ? ----Any water getting in ?-----Is the paint on the cylinderhead discoloured from the overheat ?---Any pictures of this 37 year old motor ?

I dont have a pic right now, When I get home I will try n post one.There is water getting in the lower unit. the screws didnt have o rings, but I got some recently. I can turn the propeller with my hand. I will definately mess with it more this weekend
