will not run on hotter plugs 1983 70 hp

i have a 70 hp merc 1983 still on break in fresh powerhead, im having problems starting, so i tried a hotter plug 78 other than 76 i think that the # l76v champion , well i can get it to start on old stock plugs but new plugs nothing they all have spark any ideas

Ok, back-up here first.

Why was the powerhead rebuilt?

Was the problem that toasted it in the first place identified and corrected?

Bet you a case of spark plugs she ate the top cylinder! (Got four of them in the shop that did.)

Why would you run a hotter plug? That's Russian Roulette with a motor like that!

exhust plate cracked flooded out, all three had seized rings, but the top was the worst so ya any ideas

y would i start looking for a new powerhead, its a two stroke a 1983 for that matter simple i thought this was a forum for help and brain storming troubleshooting ect. u havent giving me or anyone ive talked to any decent ideas, waste my time,

Why don't you give us the whole story so we don't go back and forth not knowing what you have done.

You rebuilt the powerhead - correct? and now you say it has trouble starting.

So what have you tried?

Did you rebuild the carbs? rebuild the fuel pump? or just slap everything back together after getting the cylinders sorted out.

Does it run ok once it's started or will it not start at all?

Our advice here is free and we give up alot of our time trying to help out. If you don't provide specific details in the first place we don't know if you can rebuild a motor in your sleep or were surprised that it had sparkplugs when you finally got the hood off.

So if you want a detailed "constructive" suggestion, tell us what you have done and we can give you an "intelligent" place to start troubleshooting.

Because vague questions with no detail, just wastes our time....

Fella, settle down. These guys know a LOT about two stroke outboards and in particular inline Mercs.
They're just trying to help you out.
So, can you give them the full story as requested?
Also, if you can run a compression tester on the engine and any other basic diagnostics and report back, they'll be able to help in some way.
